Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using Gold API.
Is the API really free?+
Yes. The real-time price endpoint is free with unlimited requests. The price history and OHLC endpoints are also free for up to 10 requests per hour, shared between the two. If you need more than that, the Premium plan gives you unlimited access.
See pricing →How can you offer so much for free? What's the catch?+
There's no catch. The service is heavily optimized: it's built with low-level languages and high performance databases, and live prices are kept in memory so responses are almost instant. Because each request costs so little to serve, we can offer generous free limits and keep the Premium plan cheap.
Read why we built it →Are prices per troy ounce?+
Yes. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium prices are per troy ounce (about 31.1 grams), the standard unit for precious metals. A troy ounce is slightly heavier than a regular ounce, so convert using 31.1035 grams, not 28.35.
Is it the spot price?+
Yes. The API returns the spot price, which is the current market price for immediate delivery. Dealers usually charge a premium on top of spot when selling coins and bars.
Do I need an API key?+
Not for real-time prices. The /price and /symbols endpoints need no key or sign up. The /history and /ohlc endpoints need an API key, sent in the x-api-key header.
Read the API docs →How do I get an API key?+
Create a free account, then open the API Keys page in your dashboard to generate a key.
Create a free account →Are there rate limits?+
On the free plan, the history and OHLC endpoints share a limit of 10 requests per hour, so you could make 5 requests to each before being throttled. There is no rate limit on real-time prices, however, spam will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Spam is usually considered sending multiple requests per second to the same exact endpoint. Prices only change every 30 seconds, so cache each response for 30 seconds. IPs that spam the API may be banned.
How often are prices updated?+
Live prices are updated every 30 seconds. Every /price response includes a cache-control header with the number of seconds until the next update, so you know exactly how long to cache it.
What timezone are timestamps in?+
Everything is in UTC, both in the API and on this website. Convert to your local timezone in your own code if you need to.
What does updatedAt mean on live prices?+
It's the time, in UTC, that we last fetched the price from our data source. It tells you how fresh the price is. If your app relies on up-to-date prices, it's good practice to check updatedAt before using a price, and handle it if the price is older than you'd expect.
Which assets do you support?+
Gold (XAU), Silver (XAG), Platinum (XPT), Palladium (XPD), Copper (HG), Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
Browse the assets →Can I get prices in a currency other than USD?+
Yes. Add the currency code to the end of the URL, for example /price/XAU/EUR. Supported currencies are USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, CNY, HKD, SGD, SEK, NOK, DKK, NZD, MXN, INR, BRL, ZAR and KRW.
Can I call the API from my website's frontend?+
Yes. CORS is enabled, so you can call the real-time price API straight from the browser. Keep API keys on your server though, since anything in frontend code is visible to visitors.
Can I use the API commercially?+
Yes. Commercial use is always permitted, including in web apps, mobile apps, and websites you build for clients. Attribution of this service is not required but it's appreciated.
Read the terms →What does the Premium plan include?+
For $10 a month you get unlimited requests to every endpoint, minute and hour groupings on the price history API, unlimited OHLC data, and email support.
See pricing →How do I cancel my subscription?+
Log in and go to Manage Subscription in your dashboard. You can cancel there at any time.
Manage your subscription →Do you offer refunds?+
Refunds are given at our discretion, typically for billing mistakes or service interruptions. Get in touch if something went wrong.
Where does the data come from, and how accurate is it?+
Prices come from multiple data providers. If one goes down, the API falls back to the next source. We spot check and cross reference every data source, both historical and new, against others to make sure the data is good. We work hard to keep the data accurate, but we can't guarantee it, so please verify prices before making financial decisions with them.
How do I get support?+
Premium subscribers get email support. Log in and visit the Support page in your dashboard to get in touch.
